The
E34 M5 was
produced in two distinct versions, each with several variations.
Early cars have a
3,535-cc 24-valve inline-6
known as the S38 B36.
3.8-liter (3,795cc) version of the S38
(designated S38 B38) and gained Adaptive M Suspension, plus a few
cosmetic changes. The
3.8-liter M5s
were available in both LHD and RHD variations, but there were no
North American or South African editions. However, there was a
small production run (891 built) of the
E34 M5 Touring,
or station wagon, all built to 3.8-liter European specification in
left-hand drive.
